We set off in good time and had an easy run to the airport. The weather improved for the send off: 72 degrees and sunny. We collected a $50 refund for the tobacco smell the previous renter left in the car, along with his disposable lighter. Boarding has started on Flight 76: MCO to MCR. We're on our way so bye for now. In the air Our course took us right back over Cocoa Beach, so in the four hours after leaving Larry and Dorie's we travelled seven miles, albeit vertically!
The return wasn't as smooth as the outward flight; the fasten seatbelt signs were on quite a lot. David manages to sleep nevertheless, after a good dinner and a glass of wine. We had had a beer in the Outback at the airport before taking off; the waitress made a point of not asking for ID, unlike one a couple of years ago. The arrival went smoothly, except for the long walk to immigration. The bags appeared, we collected the car, de-iced it and set off. Amazingly we got away from Manchester and through the Black Country without ever coming to a stop; and all in bright sunshine under a cloudless blue sky. The heating was on when we got home, thanks to a text message. We've unpacked, had supper, and are wondering how soon we can go to bed with a clear conscience. Roll on Florida 2021.
Yesterday's main event was an evening boat ride out of Vero Beach on a 'pontoon'. This is a bit like a minibus on floats with open sides and an outboard motor. The idea was to see lots of birds and a few dolphins, which we did. The location was the site of the USA's first wildlife reserve, set up by Teddy Roosevelt in 1903. It is also part of the intracoastal waterway set up after WWII in response to German U-boat captains' 'Happy Time' sinking coastal shipping in 1942. We enjoyed the ride which ended with a lovely sunset. We had dinner at a very American restaurant, and C's Reuben sandwich was served on dishes identical to the ones we have at home! Look familiar? Today we helped with the communal breakfast and then went a few miles to a classic car show, both reruns of last year events, and many more in the case of the breakfast. The cars were a bit 'molested' and not old enough for David's taste but we did get some picture...
